We bade him farewell on 26 July in the municipal cemetery in Powązki district of Warsaw.
INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH
Protection Behind Double Barrier
Arsons caused by inmates constitute for 90% of all fires in prisons. Thus, prevention is of special importance. About prevention behind the prison's bars we talk with Roman Łu-kaszewski from the Security Office of the Central Board of Prison Service. (own info)
Vizille
"Hold on to your seats! The brakes are off!" - these are probably the last words heard by 26 Polish pilgrims on their way back to Poland from a shrine in La Salette, France. Afterwards there were only flames and death. (own info)
Top Gear. Rescue (Non)Recognition
Nowadays cars are safer due to the increasingly better constructional solutions. However, the development in this field can make the post-accident rescue action more difficult. German organization ADAC decided to investigate this problem. By Jan Kielin
Sort Entitlements of the rescuers of the national rescue and firefighting system during mass casualty incidents
Colours of Life
During a mass casualty incident the rescuers of the national rescue and firefighting system can be forced to sort casualties by themselves. Here comes the first problem: since they have nei-ther entitlements nor qualifications to declare death, how should they mark casualties who show no signs of life? By Krzysztof Łangowski
One of three biggest fires ever in the history of the State Fire Service in the ¦więtokrzyskie province
Millions in Fire
The roof collapsed, a gas cylinder with propane-butane exploded. A fire of the production and warehouse building belonging to Quickpack Polska company in Lasków near Jędrzejów was quickly developing. Over hundred firefighters from the ¦więtokrzyskie province fought the fire. Report by Magdalena Porwet
Exercises "Eulux 2007"
Training Organizationally Difficult but Valuable
Over 510 rescuers from eight EU member states took part in training in Luxembourg. Necessary exchange of experience, raising the skills level and promoting Poland abroad are some of the benefits stemming from the fact that the SFS rescuers took part in this event. By Mariusz Feltynowski
Training under Wings
A very important part of an extinguishing action at an airport is to guarantee the continuity of giving the extinguishing agent by the Airport Fire Service supported by SFS units destined to actions at the Okęcie Airport. This was the subject of interesting training, which took place in July at the Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport. Report by Piotr Tabencki
Fear Had Big … Flames
It is 10:24am, 28 June, quiet morning in the Warsaw's district of Żoliborz is disturbed by a loud bang. Terrified residents of the block of flats at the corner of Żeromskiego Street and Lisowskiej Street observe a pillar of fire reaching the third floor just outside their windows. (own info)
On Verge of Abyss
Millennium flood, which affected Lower Silesia in July 1997, caused many dramas. While fighting the flood the rescuers had to act in very difficult conditions, risking their lives. Often the heroes of those days have remained anonymous. This applies also to Senior Sergeant Marek Żywioł, a firefighter from Wrocław, who had a brush with death ten years ago. Only his family and colleagues have been familiar with his story. Lech Lewandowski presents the story to the readers of Fire Review now.
Allies under Pressure
This time we would like to present pneumatic pads certified by the Scientific and Research Center for Fire Protection. There are many types of those devices on the market. All of them serve one aim: to save life. (own info)
Novelties and Technical Curiosities (own info)
To Outsmart the Devil
The phenomenon of BLEVE (Boiling Liquids Expanding Vapours Explosions) has been broadly described in the literature, is analysed during symposia, workshops and science and technical conferences. Very interesting theoretical articles concerning this issue were presented by Rafał Porowski and Ernest Ziębaczewski - the authors of publications in Fire Review no.4/2007 and no.1/2006. It is worth to take a look on the risks and the rescue and medical procedures during fires and explosions of liquefied hydrocarbon gas. By Jerzy Ranecki
Teenage Experts
Due to the great idea which appeared 30 years ago and commitment of several generations of firefighters the 30th Polish National Competition on Firefighting Knowledge "Young People Prevent Fires" was organized at the end of May. Report by Paweł Rochala
Jurisdiction
Judgement on the Fire
"A person who causes event, which poses threat to file or health of many persons or to property at large scale, in form of fire …" - the first sentence of the Chapter XX of the Polish Penal Code raises interpretative doubts, the Supreme Court has already dealt with. Jurisdiction formed on the basis of the penalty code of 1969, which is not in force anymore, remains valid to a great degree. By Tomasz Sawicki
