Arsonist Train
It is 16 April, almost 3pm. The afternoon passenger train no. 90121 from Bydgoszcz to Chojnice runs through the Cekcyna area. The engine driver who is observing the track does not notice sparks falling from the blocked wheels of the last carriage direct onto the bone dry grass growing next to the railway track. This leads to seven bigger and over ten smaller seats of fire on the distance of 20 km, posing a threat for a forest complex, a liquid fuel station and an LPG station in Tuchola and an old railway station in Żalno. How Do the Others Do That: Who's Afraid of Maria?
At the end of May in Warsaw there was a news item about an explosion of the only Polish nuclear reactor in ¦wierk. It turned out to be a rumour, just like all identical news items in the past. Those acquainted with atomism know that the explosion of the Maria reactor is simply physically impossible; but, unfortunately, this is not common knowledge. Such an ignorance and social phobias based on that ignorance may lead to the greatest threats to ¦wierk. (own info)
ERadioactivity Quantities
Radiation, radioactivity, irradiation, contamination, radiation dose etc. - we use those terms increasingly often, both in everyday life and in rescue work. The reason for that is the fact that radioactivity is used in an increasing number of fields, mostly in medicine, chemistry, biology, archeology, industry, Earth science, and in producing electricity. Even if you are not professionally involved with the issues of ionizing radiation, it is worth to organize the knowledge about the basic problems of physics and nuclear technology, starting with the used quantities and their units. Through Dracula's Land
The last days of March and the first few of April I spent with my friends in Romania, a very picturesque country, EU member state since 1 January. For ten days we traveled the length and breadth of the country, saw its historic sites and admired landscapes. But breathtaking views and fascinating buildings from the past and present are not everything one could see there. Maybe the others did not notice that, but as a firefighter-preventer I am a bit professionally oversensitive and I see things other tourists would not pay attention to. I would like to share my observations with Fire Review readers. By Paweł Rochala
