Conducted with the help of helicopters, the evacuation during last year's flood in May, June and August proved unequivocally the importance of the rescue potential of the State Fire Service firefighters specializing in high altitude rescue operations. High altitude rescue entails great training, equipment and rescue techniques. However, without commitment of people and their efforts this specialization would not have developed so dynamically. Profiles of people creating this specialization are presented in the latest issue of Fire Review.







Jubilee Test

Almost in the eve of the special celebration of 30th anniversary of high altitude rescue in Poland we had a chance to see the real condition of the specialization in our country and in the neighboring countries. It was possible during the 10th Polish (and 6th International) Maneuvers of High Altitude Rescue "Białystok 2010", conducted in October 2010. More in the article by Jerzy Linder.







Gas Explosion in Zielona Góra

First news on the loss of tightness of a gas installation in one of the housing estates in Zielona Góra did not suggest that the situation would develop so dramatically. It did though. Rescue action was conducted in three housing estates with almost 300 residential buildings. 6,500 people were evacuated. The action was conducted while it was minus 14 centigrade. Firefighter in Kindergarten. Lesson Outline

Contrary to what we could think, teaching safety in kindergartens in a part of the educational system in Poland. Promotion of knowledge and safe behaviors and preventing situations threatening safety is a task specified in a regulation of Minister of National Education on core curriculum of preschool education and general education in particular types of schools. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation in a New Way

The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation issued again an agreement on recommended changes in the procedures of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation last year. The European Resuscitation Council and the American Heart Association followed the ILCOR with presenting their guidelines. By Andrzej Kołacki.







Mission Montenegro 2010

Montenegro was hit by a huge flood at the beginning of December last year. As a result of heavy rains, water in local rivers and lakes overtopped the banks and flooded populated river valleys and depression areas, posing a threat to people and property. About 70 percent of the country was under water. Floods caused death of several persons and evacuation of over 20,000 people. Because of such a dramatic situation, the authorities of Montenegro asked the European Commission for help in removing the consequences of the flood. By Damian Woszczyna and Leszek Tanaś.

Chemical incidents involving toxic substances being released to the atmosphere require recognition and monitoring of the substance concentration in the air. Psychologists have worked in the State Fire Service already for seventeen years. At first they were employed in the Main School of Fire Service and several regional HQ. The group has grown slowly with time, however, there have been no uniform strategy for using their competences in the national rescue and firefighting system. Scrutinized Overtime

The history of disputes on overtime worked by the firefighters started in 1997. It has been a significant problem for all these years. It was a subject of decisions of the highest judiciary in Poland, i.e. the Constitutional Tribunal and the Supreme Court. Last year brought some legal changes in this field. By Dariusz P.
