The Village of Komańcza Cries
Built in 1802, the Orthodox church of Care of the Mother of God in Komańcza, was, beside temples in Turzańsk and Rzepedź, the attraction of Icons' Route in the Osława Valley. Listed in register of Historic Buildings, it was the pearl of East Lemko architecture; actually, it was, as despite the struggle of 45 firefighters, it burnt down on 13 September. Two weeks before the Łódź passage of the A2 Motorway Dąbie - Stryków was opened, rescue services of the Zgierz district organized object exercises there, 5 km away from the Stryków II junction. Report by Junior Brigadier Tomasz Kubiak.
Disaster on the Border
Environment protection preventing cross-boundary ecological disasters was the main issue of the 4th International Rescue Workshop in Białowieża, organized as annually by the Voivodeship State Fire Service HQ in Białystok. The workshop gathered over a hundred participants including representatives of foreign rescue services from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Slovakia. On the first day the participants could have attended lecture series about the risks from dangerous substances; second day was devoted to the ecological and chemical exercises assuming rescue action after road/rail accident. The exercises were held on the industrial area in Czeremcha in natural-like conditions. (own info)

They Cried for Rain
Tyres of the firefighting vehicles melted, trees were falling one by one, electricity pylons wobbled dangerously; in several hours the fire spread to 30 hectares of forests, meadows, wasteland and peat bogs. For 237 hours 251 firefighters struggled with the fire, which broke out on 29 July in Białogon district of Kielce, the Świętokrzyskie province. By Magdalena Porwet.

Wood and fire is a fairy justified logical connection. Wood in every form is a great fuel, relatively cheap and highly available. As it is gained from the renewable resources, it can be easily called ecological fuel. A huge advance in the combustion technology and its devices engineering was the reason of the decrease of usage of wood as a heating fuel. Nowadays mainly due to the economic reasons the usage of wood is marginal, reduced to some households only. But the charm of the evening bonfire, crackles and "tear-jerking" smoke will remain. Apartment fires pose a very serious threat to human life and health. Smokes and toxic gases emitted during the fire are especially dangerous, as they limit visibility and cause intoxications, which account for about 75% of deaths. It is always good to bear it in mind, as we are going to face the period of increased number of apartment fires, warns Brig. Jerzy Ranecki.

Height Golden Autumn
September was a very busy period for the rescuers working at height from the State Fire Service and other services co-operating with our unit. After last year's 25th anniversary of that kind of rescue, "spidermen" have continued the training cycle and exchange of experience, supported by great aura on the exercise grounds and the atmosphere surrounding the "height unit". The most important events took place in Mysłowice and Nowy Sącz (own info).

14th International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO)

340 exhibitors from 23 countries took part in 12th International Logistics Fair, which was held on 4-7 September as a part of 14th International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce, under the patronage of Jarosław Kaczyński, Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, who ceremoniously opened the fairs. Anniversary of the Union of the Volunteer Fire Service in the Republic of Poland
Together for 85 Years
First Polish National Convention of the Fire Service of the Congress Poland took place in Warsaw 90 years ago, on 8 and 10 September 1916. The association, called the Florian Union was the idea of Bolesław Chomicz. The anniversary of integration of the volunteer fire services of the Republic of Poland into a uniform organization was celebrated in Warsaw with many events, such as the ceremony in the Royal Castle and the occasional exhibition.

Part of the Town History
This year's 120th anniversary of foundation of the fire service in Sucha Beskidzka, 50th anniversary of the District State Fire Service HQ as well as 30th anniversary of its professional fire service is a good reason to learn something about generations of the town volunteer and professional firefighters, who are so deserved for the Małopolska region.
